Gayam2 Movie Review

It is..

A film that reminds us why RGV is such an icon (in comparison).

The plot..

The film starts in Bangkok where Ram (Jagapathi Babu) and his family’s well settled life is established for a painful and boring 30 minutes or so. Then it cuts to Hyderabad and the characters of Varma’s Gaayam re-enter, the violent politician Guru Narayan (Kota Srinivas Rao) and the famous lawyer (Tanikala Bharani).

Guru Narayan’s son, an impulsive and brainless character played by the late Kota Prasad is an add on the baddies gang.

A small bang bang incident in Ram’s Bangkok coffee shop puts him on the news and Guru Narayan’s stirred up about whether Durga is actually dead. The lawyer and the son leave for Bangkok and events lead up to Ram/Durga coming back to Hyderabad to settle his old score.

Acting..

Jagapathi’s character didn’t have the emotional depth to put forth a performance like in the prequel; he’s done what he can with what was given to him.

Kota Srinivas Rao as usual pulls off a brilliant comical performance (just another day at work for the master). His son definitely couldn’t match up to the super dad.

What was good?

The film did have its moments.

Scenes involving Ram going back to being Durga and some of the scenes in the second half which mark Durga’s come back were entertaining and probably were the quickest sequences in the film.

The scenes where a few frames from the old Gaayam were shown were so arousing. A film from Varma’s glory days, has to be that way right?

What went wrong?

In comparative terms:

RGV didn’t make this film.

RGV and Mani Ratnam didn’t write the screenplay for this film.

Rasool Ellore is not the cinematographer of this film.

And there are no Revathi and Sirivenella in the cast of this film.

Talking otherwise, the film was not expecting any brains from the audience and was trying to tell too much too slowly.

Verdict

Don’t compare it with the prequel and it is quite an entertainer. Could have done better, but, at least it’s this good.

Cash found in Bhutts belonging

Cash used in the spot-fixing scandal during last week’s Lord’s Test is understood to have been found in the belongings of Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt, a report said.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Scotland Yard officers would question Butt on Friday over how marked notes were discovered from his hotel room and in his locker at the Lord’s cricket ground.

The money is believed to have been part of 150,000 pounds handed over by an undercover News of the World reporter to the alleged fixer Mazhar Majeed, the newspaper said.

The cash, given to Majeed for fixing three no-balls of the Lord’s Test between Pakistan and England, is understood to have been secretly marked so that it could be later identified by police.

According to the report, the recovered money was undergoing forensic tests to confirm police suspicions that it came from the News of the World sting.

“Early indications suggest the money found in possession of Butt originated from the sting. There are good reasons to believe this was the case,” the newspaper quoted sources as saying.

The revelation came after the International Cricket Council had charged and provisionally suspended the tainted Pakistani trio Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer, from all forms of the game pending a decision on the charges.

Balakrishna Movie Titled as Adinayakudu

Newcomer Sheena Nayyar makes her debut with MALLIKA this weekend. As she waits for the big day, she remembers the time when she landed at the office of Percept, the company which eventually took her into the wings. Soon, she turned out to be one of the very few newcomers who find themselves as a central protagonist in their very first film with the entire promotional drive revolving around them.

“I had to go through round of auditions and instill confidence in the makers that I was this one newcomer on whom they could put their money on. I indeed consider myself fortunate that they finalized me for MALLIKA”, smiles Sheena.

So what did she have in her mind when she was getting ready for her career to be defined?

“When I was pursuing studies in Delhi, I used to be interested in ramp and modelling. However, around 2007 I decided that if I had to actually make a headway into what really interested me, I had to set up base in Mumbai”, informs Sheena who had to go through a bit of struggling phase before she found her calling in Percept’s horror flick MALLIKA.

“It wasn’t as if I was wasting time during those couple of years of struggle”, continues Sheena who does sound much more confident than an average newbie who has just stepped into Bollywood, “I was doing theatre and honing my acting skills. While some new girls go to parties and other social dos to get noticed, I didn’t want to take that route. I was very focused in what I wanted to do in my career which means late nights were an absolute no-no.”

Khans and Sinha are family friends

If Sonakshi Sinha sounds casual about her on-screen pairing with Salman Khan, there is a reason behind that. Since she shares a friendly relationship with him for years (Khans and Sinhas have been family friends), there has been good camaraderie that the duo has shared off the sets for quite some time now.

“Oh yes, definitely”, Sonakshi nods in agreement here; “In fact we used to work out together. It was quite homely with him as we also had our coffee sessions. He also taught me how to paint. I made two paintings and because he was the teacher here, my style bears a lot of similarity to his. I made some faces and figures. Though I am a lazy painter and haven’t done much since the shoot of DABANGG got over, I definitely want to do more of it.”

While painting came by chance, one wonders whether acting was always her first choice? After all acting is a profession that her sibling Luv Sinha picked up much before her as he made a debut earlier this year in SADIYAAN.

“Honestly speaking, I wasn’t very interested in acting”, says Sonakshi, “It was overweight and was studying as a fashion designer. It was only later when I thought of trying my hand in acting. Though there were movies which were coming my way, it was imperative that I start with Salman since Khan family and we have been associated for a very long time. There is a comfort level shared between us and hence a mutual decision was taken by both the families. I guess this is just a perfect launch.”

Salman Says no chance with SRK

As the number of controversies around him increase, so does his fan-base. “Jiska press nahi hota, uske fans hote hai,” inferred Chulbul Pandey alias Salman Khan, while speaking to a trade analyst.

Commenting on the performance of Shatrughan ‘Shotgun’ Sinha’s daughter Sonakshi Sinha, Salman said, “Sonakshi has done the film as if she has done 100 films before.”

So is Sallu Bhai’s new found love for Aamir Khan an outcome of his rivalry with King Khan? “Shahrukh and I don’t talk anymore. We had misunderstanding and hence parted ways.” Clarified Salman. And almost as an afterthought he added, “There is no chance of Shahrukh and Salman coming together in future.”

Does he not miss his once upon a time good buddy Shahrukh, Salman fired, “Shahrukh meri girl friend nahi thi……apni purani girlfreind ko miss nahi karta, Shahrukh ko kya karunga….”

Black Berry Data Access is Legitimate

The chief of the UN’s telecommunications agency urged the Canadian manufacturer of the BlackBerry to allow law enforcement agencies, including those in India, access to customer data, saying governments had legitimate security concerns, which should not be ignored.

The International Telecommunication Union agency’s Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure said that all governments engaged in the fight against terrorism had the right to demand access to users’ information from the maker of the BlackBerry – Research in Motion Ltd.

“Those are genuine requests,” he said. “There is a need for cooperation between governments and the private sector on security issues”.

RIM has said it complies with all legal requests, but is unable to provide anyone with the text of e-mails sent using its corporate service, which is designed from the ground up for secure communications.

The International Telecommunication Union is responsible for coordinating the use of the global radio spectrum, promoting international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, and establishing standards for the telecommunications industry.

The little-known body also serves as a global forum for discussion of cutting-edge communications issues.

The agency has no independent regulatory power, but Toure’s comments are a barometer of sentiment among the agency’s 192 member states, who are expected to re-elect him to a second term later this year.

At least five of those members – India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – are already considering banning some BlackBerry services over concerns that the devices’ powerful data encryption could be used as a cover for terrorist and criminal activity.

Civil libertarians have argued that the controversy is in fact fueled by authoritarian governments’ inability to eavesdrop on BlackBerry-using citizens.

Governments in the US and elsewhere have largely made their peace with encryption technology. E-mails can still be obtained through legal channels, for example by obtaining a warrant to search the corporate servers of companies that use BlackBerry.

But that isn’t enough for some officials in Asia and the Middle East, who have demanded that RIM modify its practices to allow them wholesale access to BlackBerry e-mails as they’re being transmitted.

RIM has thrown up its hands, saying the way its system is set up prevents anyone except its clients from decrypting communications.

The impasse has sent the company’s share price plummeting, and on Friday RIM stock hit a 16-month low.

A company representative in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Toure’s remarks.

Indian Players Fails Dope Test

Two athletes and four wrestlers have tested positive in random testing conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) during the trials in Patiala in the run-up to the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games and provisionally suspended by their respective federations.

The wrestlers – Sumit (74 kg), Mausam Khatri (96 kg) and Rajiv Tomar (120 kg) in men’s freestyle and Gursharanpreet Kaur (72 kg) in women’s section – were part of the Commonwealth Games squad and have been replaced, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president GS Mander said.

The two athletes, who returned positive in the dope test conducted by NADA during the trials at Patiala from August 5-8, are shot-putter Saurav Vij and discus-thrower Akash Antil.

Vij, who was part of the Commonwealth Games squad announced on Tuesday, and Antil have been provisionally suspended with immediate effect, the Athletics Federation of India said.

“As per the report received from National Anti Doping Agency (NADA), the athletes Saurav Vij and Akash Antil were found positive in the dope test conducted during National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships held at Patiala from August 5-8.

“They are hereby provisionally suspended with immediate effect till the pending enquiry,” Ravinder Chaudhry, Officiating Secretary, AFI, said.

The incident comes barely a week after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) bailed out the weightlifters by giving an interest-free loan to the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) to pay off fines due to doping sanctions.

In wrestling, WFI named Narsingh Pancham Yadav (74 kg), Anil Mann (96 kg) and Praveen (120 kg) in the freestyle section and Anshu Tomar (72 kg) in the women’s section as replacements in the 21-member squad which include seven women.

The wrestlers tested positive for a banned substance called methylhexanamine. The tests were part of routine random testing by the NADA during the August 8-9 trials in the run-up to the Games.

The suspended wrestlers can appeal against the result but the WFI had to name their replacements since Thursday was the last date for official entries of participants.

A dejected Mander said in an emergency meeting on Thursday that the WFI decided to provisionally suspend the four wrestlers.

“During the trials, we tested all the probables and these four wrestlers tested positive. The methylhexanamine is a stimulant and it is easily available at medical stores. Now we have sent them a notice and we will take necessary action against them,” Mander told IANS.

Mander said that in the last four years, since Sushil Kumar’s bronze in Beijing Olympics, Indian wrestling has come a long way and WFI is trying its best to keep the sport dope-free.

“We have adopted a strict policy against doping. The WFI has conducted several out-of-competition testing this year and only these four have tested positive. We have come down hard on cheaters,” said Mander, after the emergency meeting of the selection committee at the KD Jadhav Wrestling Stadium.
